What's an Osteo? A Gorgeous African Daisy

    Last updated 1 month ago

Nothing can perk up a garden or landscape quite like an arrangement of beautiful flowers. Considering the many thousands of flower varieties, however, it can be very difficult to decide which flowers to plant. If you’re looking for a flower that will give your yard a unique look, consider the osteo, or the African daisy. Here’s a brief profile of this particularly beautiful flower:

    What It Is

The osteo, short for osteospermum, looks much like a typical daisy, except the petals are often more colorful and the centers are much darker in color. Osteos are native to South Africa, and there are about 50 different species that range in color from golden yellows to deep reds.

    Where to Plant

Like other daisy varieties, osteos grow the best in direct sunlight and can tolerate a lot of abuse. Basically anywhere in your yard is a good place for osteos, from a dry rock bed to a garden of rich soil. You can even grow osteos in a sunroom or greenhouse. Wherever there’s plenty of sun, osteos are sure to thrive.

    How to Grow

Since osteos don’t typically do well in cold weather, it’s generally a good idea to wait until the beginning of spring to sow their seeds. Fertilizing osteos slightly will certainly help them along, though it isn’t necessary. An osteo will do well as long as it has plenty of sunlight and is not overwatered. For more advice growing osteos, speak with a garden professional.

Planting several varieties of osteos is an excellent was to give your garden a lovely, unique look. If you’re looking to browse several different species of osteos, come by Rockwell Farms. Rockwell Farms Has Tips for Your Spring Garden

    Last updated 2 months ago

Though the weather may be cold now, gardeners all over the country are growing excited as spring approaches. If you’re thinking about planting a garden for the first time, you probably can’t wait to put the seeds in the ground and watch your garden thrive. However, it’s important that you plant your seeds at the right time. Here’s a brief guide to spring planting:

    • Flowers

When it comes to most plants, you generally want to plant your seeds a few weeks before the threat of frost is over. In North Carolina, that usually means sometime during the month of March. Most perennials and annuals should be planted during this time.

    • Vegetables

The ideal time to plant vegetable seeds varies greatly on the vegetable. For example, pumpkins, squash, and cucumbers should be planted in mid- to late March, while root vegetables like onions and leeks should be planted in mid- to late February. If you plant your vegetables too early, your seeds will freeze; if you plant too late, you may not be able to harvest.

    • Herbs

On average, herbs need to be planted much earlier than vegetables and flowers. For the best results, you should plant mint, oregano, and parsley in mid-February. Coriander and dill, on the other hand, should do fine if planted in early March.

    • Trees

When it comes to planting trees, the best time is typically late March or early April. Trees with roots that are balled in burlap don’t need the head start for germination—they need soil that isn’t frozen so they can more easily take root.
